I am fascinated by Ms Hanson's incredible ability to be unable to listen.
I despair that Australian's are rapidly becoming narrow minded but even in that climate Ms Hanson has had some very clear message. Ethnic Cleansing is not the answer.
For those that think that we should deny entry to people based on race or religion - wake up and smell the coffee. The world is multi cultural and multi faith. The only logical conclusion of denying multi culturalism is genocide. Sooner or later you have to deal with "those other types" unless you intent to remove them from the planet.
However let us focus on the real issue. The behaviours we expect from our citizens. Since I have NO RIGHT to tell anyone else what religion they can have they similarly have NO RIGHT to tell me either. I consider Sharia law to be repressive and barbaric and I will not tolerate it being imposed here. However if people's religion asks them to live by that law then provided the secular laws of our country are followed then that's fine by me.
Ms Hanson seems destined to continually make the same mistake. She poorly understands the real problem. You do not have to be an intellectual to realise that some level of analysis is required before blaming the nearest minority for whatever is wrong in your life. She seems to have no concept of how to look at the problem from both sides. What if another country had a policy that Australians were unwelcome? Or Catholics? I hardly imagine Ms Hanson would calmly reply - "Well that's OK, they can hate us if they want to...".
Since nothing will sway Ms Hanson from trying to gain political power using irrational fear and rhetoric it falls to the public to judge her on election day. I trust that the public will remember that what they propose for others may one day be applied to them.
I remain hopeful because the Australian voting population have very rarely made terrible mistakes. I believe that in a truly representative democracy the right decisions are generally made. It is only when democracy is distorted that absurdities (like George W Bush) occur.
